Plan for photo shoot

This is the plan for my music magazine photshoot:

  • When: I will take the pictures on the 31st of January
  • Location: My photos will be taken at marlwood school in the music department as it is a music magazine and the music department contains white wash walls which will be a good neatral background to take the pictures against.
  • Who of: My photos will be of George stroud a pupil of Marlwood school who will be in a music lesson so I will take the photos while he is playing and using his instruments to make the image more natural and realistic.
  • I will present the original images on this blog and when I have edited the images that I feal are best I will also post these on here next to the originals to see how they have progressed after being edited.

Survey results

These are the results from the survey that I created. From these results I have noticed that music magazines are not as widely read as I thought. most people feal that the music magazines on the market today cater for there specific taste in music well. I have also noticed that most people have a wide range of music taste so I will try and not to be bias upon what genre of music I include in my magazine, I will also make sure that i include information on the various chosen topics in question 5 where possible.

Creating my Survey

I have created a survey to find what my audience like the most and feal should be included in music magazines. I used the website survey monkey and sent the link of my survey to a number of friends through social networking sites to gain a wide range of answers from a wider audience. I hope to gain from this information that i would not be able to find myself such as audience opinions and conventions upon how an audience reads a magazine.

Testing fonts for front cover

We both decided that it would be a good idea to test our title in different fonts as the font used can cause the writing to subliminally mean something else. We typed our title "music matters" into word changing the font for each one to fonts we have previously seen used and fonts that we both like. Our favourites are Broadway, Ar essence, Cooper black and ar julian so we will further test these to select the one or two that will be used in the final piece.

Plan for music magazine

We wish to call my music magazine 'Music Matters' and it is going to be a magazine to highlight the best artists, albums and singles of the year and to showcase any up-and-coming artists. On the front cover we are going to have a medium close up of our model either singing or playing the guitar and this is going to fill the whole page of my front cover. We want to have the colour scheme as white and red, providing that it works with the lighting of the image we select.

On the contents page we plan to have a dull back ground but then have small images inserted in among the text as references to different articles in the magazine. Again, the colour scheme will be white and red.
Some of the stories we will put on the contents page are;

  • the latest up and coming artists
  • top 10 albums of 2012
  • what to look out for in 2013
  • introducing George Stroud
  • the best selling records of 2013 so far
The double page spread will have an image over the left page and then have a headline on the right. The right will also have an image taking up 1/4 of the page and then have text working around it. The story we will be putting on the double page spread is 'introducing George Stroud' and it will be about George, an artist to look out for in the future.

(Myself and Madeleine Griffin are producing the same final piece so this post will be situated on both our blogs)

Conventions of music magazine

Almost all music magazines I have looked at and analysed I have noticed have had the title situated at the top of the page I assume this is due to when it is in a magazine stand it might not be the front magazine so and reader looking for it will look for the title as this is the one thing that doesn't change over the whole magazine. There is usually more than one text colour used and they are usually colours that contrast such as white and black or red and yellow this gives a good effect and is a convention I will abide by.

other devices used include:

  • masthead
  • sub-headings
  • cover stories
  • pictures
  • captions
  • page references
  • quotes from articles
  • big images covering almost all the space on a page
All of these effects and themes I will use in my magazine so that it fits in with the conventions of today's media and looks as professional as possible.

Evaluation of current music magazine covers

This cover is similar to others that I have seen but is different through the colours that are used in the fonts. All the font colours are the same apart from a few sub-headings that are coloured to match her dress I haven't seen this used before but I think it gives a good effect and makes the cover look more proffesional in its simplicity again the main image covers the title but it is still readable, the white background highlights the image and gives it a more dramatic look.

Evaluation of current music magazine cover

This cover in my opinion is too cluttered it seems to detract away from what is important by trying to include too much information this is something I will try to avoid when producing my magazine. One feature I like is the way the main image overlaps the text and title giving it the look of leaving the page. This magazine includes a font style that is constant throughout and it uses similar but different colours that aren't first noticeable but highlight section upon second glance this is a good effect and I think it works well with this cover.

Evaluation of current music magazine covers

This front cover for the "vibe" music magazine which follows typical conventions, there is a main image of a popluar artist in the middle with a white background to higlight him and the text. The title is situated at the top as when it is on a magazine stand this is usauly the most visible part. the rred text stand out well against the white background and this in turn highlghts the title and text for emphasis I like the effect of a white sterlie background.

Evaluation of preliminary task

To create my preliminary task which was to produce a magazine front cover for a school, I first selected the picture I liked the most form my photoshoot I also asked friends and family on there opinions upon my photos to gain a wider prospective. I entered the image into publisher and edited it to fit the size needed for the cover I then added the title which is the name of the school "Marlwood" and added their motto of "working together for excellence" I also added the school logo as this is a convention for almost all magazines and it makes the cover more professional and presentable. Then using different fonts i added small captions and sub heading to show what was included within the magazine and highlighted this font yellow so that the title was not the only eye catching feature. I think my preliminary task was a success but the back of the image seems to cluttered which draws away form the righting apart form this I am pleased with the outcome.

This is the preliminary task that I have created which is the fornt cover for my school magazine it follows the conventions of using two different font colours and a main image to base you design around, this i have found from my audience research.

What I have learned from my current magazine research

For my preliminary task I have decided from my magazine annotations that I need to include colours that contrast well with each other to highlight the text they are used upon and a font that looks professional, I will do some audience research into fonts to find what looks professional and formal. I have decided that the magazines that are most effective include people in the images, so I will decide after some audience research whether or not to include more than one person and who and of what gender. As the magazine is for a school the location will be at my school but I need to decide where and how the people in the image will be composed.
This is the second school magazine I have chosen to annotate with information that is relevent to my preliminary task
I have found this image and annotated it with information that i think is relavent and will help my work.

Plan for Preliminary task

For my preliminary task I will be creating a magazine cover for my school, before I do this I will research into current school magazines to find what colour schemes fonts and amounts of texts are the normal for front covers so my piece isn't out of the ordinary. I plan to gather a selection of front covers of current school magazines and to annotate them to highlight housetyles and themes that are common throughout to give me a better idea on what to include.
